Material Removal Rate Calculator

Estimate the instantaneous volume removed by a rectangular milling engagement. The result helps compare roughing strategies and check power assumptions.

Shop-floor check

A high calculated MRR may exceed tool, spindle-power, torque, workholding, chip evacuation, or rigidity limits. Verify the complete process before cutting.

01 / METHOD

How to use this calculator

  1. Select one consistent unit system.
  2. Enter the engaged width, depth, and cutting feed.
  3. Calculate the instantaneous removal rate.

02 / APPLICATION

Where it helps

  • Comparing roughing toolpaths
  • Estimating spindle power requirements with a separate material constant
  • Sanity-checking programmed engagement

03 / BOUNDARIES

Assumptions and limitations

Assumes

  • Rectangular engagement
  • Feed is at commanded cutting speed
  • Dimensions stay constant through the evaluated cut

Does not cover

  • Not cycle-average MRR
  • Does not calculate spindle power or torque
  • Complex cutter engagement needs a more detailed model

04 / QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is this average cycle MRR?

No. It is the instantaneous rate during the entered engagement. Air moves, ramps, corners, and machine acceleration lower cycle-average removal.

Can I get horsepower from MRR?

Only with a suitable material-specific power value and efficiency assumptions. Those are outside this calculator because they vary substantially.

What feed should I enter?

Use linear cutting feed per minute, not chip load per tooth. The feed and dimensions must use the same base unit.
